Background I was born in Chevy Chase, Maryland. I sang and danced all my growing up years:.. From church and school choirs to school and community musicals. I went to Bard college in upstate New York and, after graduating as a Music Major, I magically landed my first job singing and dancing in 'Hair" on Broadway. While in New York, I met Swami Satchidananda. After a short and successful career in the entertainment industry, I moved to California to 'find myself'... to study and teach integral yoga and prenatal yoga and to have children. My next main career was Mothering. I enjoyed raising two girls, Grace and Glory, who also practice yoga in their own way. FYI: Glory now has a website: www.tempstewglorycv.com for her job promo. Over the years, I have rotated careers, depending on what was most fun and could pay the bills, between: massage therapist, meditation and yoga instructor, vocal instructor, choir director, recording artist and teacher of children. Now the kids are independent. I enjoy life as a full-time yoga teacher/massage therapist. I teach a vinyasa flow style yoga and offer an eclectic therapeutic massage including sweedish, deeptissue and Thai. Yoga Background I met Swamiji in NYC in 1970. I was a dancer and loved the peace yoga brought to my overworked body. I moved to California to study and live in ashrams with Swami Satchidananda. I chose a very hands on way to learn about yoga. In 1975, I also learned from Baba Hari Das in Santa Cruz, California. During the 1970's and 80's I taught a soft style of yoga, meditation classes and retreats in Hawaii and California. I also taught aerobics in the 90s. Then, I was introduced to Vipassana Meditation and this practice provided a paradyme shift toward 'change your mind day' and my spiritual path. When my kids left my home, I was able to focus on my continuing yoga education more seriously again. I was almost 50 years old and I had an unstable pelvis and hip pain (gravity had had its way). Knowing that I needed to develop more core strength, I then got stronger through and learned from Bikram's practice and Ashtanga Vinyasa. In 2001, I gratefully discovered Anusara Yoga, alignment and therapeutics, and was gifted with personal relief from my ongoing hip and low back pain, and was also given incredible information to share. I am currently in Love with Prana Vinyasa Flow and have taken numerous classes and teacher trainings with Shiva Rea. I am registered with the Yoga Alliance, E-RYT 500, and have developed a flow style yoga I call 'Irie Yoga' emphasizing body awareness through breath, alignment principles through flow, core strength and joy. 'Irie' means 'it's all good' and my style of teaching reflects my varied background and my love of all I'm learning from my life. I take great joy in my developing therapeutics practice, in both private and workshop settings. I love supporting individuals in there ever deepening inner body awareness, ever more conscious dance with gravity, ever more attentive, mindful art of living.... through yoga, in practice and in life. For information about my private work see Private Coaching page. For information about my Deep Yoga Retreats/ Studies, Developing a Home Yoga Practice series and Prana Shakti Weekends see the Workshops page. If you have any questions email iris@irieyoga.com . Facilitating semi-silent retreats has also been my great pleasure. Sharing an expanding view of yoga: from mindful movement, chanting, philosophy, pranayama and mindful seated and walking meditation.
